My Necktie Is Killing Me Slowly (and other fashion tales)

choking.jpgWay back when I remember an interview with a rock star. I don't remember who it was, but I vividly remember his answer to a question.

Q: What sets famous people apart from 'regular' people.
A: Tailored clothing

Think about it.  Even when the stars wear absurd looking clothing, it always seems to fit right.

This rocker's secret was having his measurements taken in the U.S. and then having his clothes custom made overseas.  In his words, it actually worked out to be cheaper than buying from your local chain store.

Proving that point is new Website IndoChino. These guys will custom-tailor non-designer suits (made in China) starting at $199.  Not sure if my washed up rocker friend is behind this great idea.

Speaking of clothes fitting right...

I need your help with a serious problem,  Every day I'm being suffocated.  Perhaps you read about my anticlimactic promotion.  Well since then, my boss has been riding me about my tie know.  I'm NOT kidding.

I am a good corporate soldier, showing up everyday dressed professionally, playing well with the team and getting the job done well.  The only two things that aren't perfectly conforming:

- occasional facial hair
- loose tie knots

So far, it's the latter that has been on the bossman's radar.

"Too fat."
"Too loose."
"Is your collar too big?"
"Is the top button buttoned?"

This is the beauty of Jobacle; content writes itself. You can't make this stuff up.  Now since I don't want to get lectured everyday, or violate the loosely-termed dress code ("nothing trendy"), I'm forced to comply.  But when I tell you that I'd consider reverting back to my old position to avoid choking myself everyday, I'm not really kidding.

Here's where I need your help. What is the solution?

> Bigger shirts?  They look sloppy.
> Thinner ties? Perhaps, but I can't afford a new wardrobe.
> Clip-Ons? Do they still make these? Are they all lame looking?
> Adam's Apple reduction surgery?  No thanks.

Please send your advice soon.  Oxygen...is...running...out.

They certainly still make clip on ties. Your best bet is to find a store near you that sells law enforcement uniforms. All of them wear clip-on ties - it's mandated by their departments. You will only find solid colors, though.

The answer might be in the form of new shirts. You will probably need one with better measurements for your self, and you will need to be more critical of the kind of collar on the shirt.

There are a variety of different collars, and when sized accordingly, will offset your face and neck better, and give you better comfort.
