End Wasted Talent

Last month I was approached by the PR folks for Kaplan University asking if they could republish some Jobacle posts on a new Web site. Their pitch:

"The overall mission of this Kaplan-sponsored site is to highlight content and opinion from thought leaders in education and personal development - and provide a wealth of information to help people make smart decisions about their education."

I figured why the heck not. I know nothing about their academic offerings, but their PR campaign and messaging has balls.

"Just because a university has been around for 200 years doesn't mean it can prepare you for the next 20."

We couldn't agree more.

And in one of those ironic moments when something that you've never thought about grabs your attention and then you see it again... I caught an ad on TV this afternoon that impressed the hell out of me. It almost gave me goosebumps. What was it for? A spot for Kaplan, of course. Check it out below, and if they've got your interest, help them 'End Wasted Talent.'

Awesome! Hope Jobacle gets something out of this little transaction, too!

I have nothing but positive things to say about the Kaplan experience. Both my wife and sister have taken online classes and have benefited from the additional education. It is true that just because a learning institution has been around forever that it's equipped to handle today's marketplace.

What recession!? University of Phoenix and other online school advertisements are everywhere. I don't know where people are getting the money to go back to school but it seems like more people than ever are doing it.

@Janice: There's no doubt that school is expensive. I don't care where you go and what you study: you will PAY.

However, when you take that expense and divide it out by years, you will discover that you can 'recoup' the expense rather quickly. Plus, loans from the government generally don't have to be paid back until you complete the program.

Going back to school or finishing a degree doesn't really make much sense unless you are focused and have a plan. Don't do it just for the sake of doing it!

Andrew, do you know if they'll be running this ad during the Superbowl? I'm kind of surprised they didn't hold it for the big game.

I love that commercial. I've seen a couple of others they've done... very effective and refreshing, which I assume represents their programs. I even like their tag line ("A different school of thought"). I see so many BAD commercials that it's a rare treat to see good ones, even if I'm not interested in what they're selling.

And the fact that they've reached out to you, Andrew, shows they know what they're doing! :-)

That's darn nice of you to say, Bonnie! I greatly appreciate it! ;-)
