10 Most Stressful Jobs (And the 10 Least Stressful Jobs)

CareerCast.com has released a report identifying the most stressful jobs for 2010 based on 200 surveys that measured work environment, job competitiveness and risk.

Top 10 Most Stressful Jobs for 2010:

1.    Firefighter
2.    Corporate Executive
3.    Taxi Driver
4.    Surgeon
5.    Police Officer
6.    Commercial Pilot
7.    Highway Patrol
8.    Public Relations Officer
9.    Advertising Executive
10.   Real Estate Agent

The 10 Least Stressful Jobs for 2010:

1.    Musical Instrument Repairer
2.    Medical Records Technician
3.    Actuary
4.    Forklift Operator
5.    Appliance Repairer
6.    Medical Secretary
7.    Librarian
8.    Bookkeeper
9.    Piano Tuner
10.   Janitor

The list looks pretty standard without any big surprises...except for real estate agent.  Aside from the competitive nature of the field and a crappy economy, I fail to see the stress and/or risk with the occupation.

Whether you have one of the most stressful jobs or not, learn how to quit your job gracefully and not end up in need of stress treatment.

Also, I’m sure being a medical records technician is less stressful than attending medical billing schools and working with insurance forms all day!

Anything on the list you disagree with?

I've treated a few stressed-out librarians. Who knew there was so much drama and back-stabbing in the stacks?

Oh. Interesting article. I should say it is a good post. However, i think, there is no stressful job for a person if he/she loves what he is doing. It all depends on your preferences.

As a library director, all I can say is that those other librarians must work for some other form of government, and in a place where the other library pepole don't seem to be intent on destroying, shutting down, limiting or redefining anybody who is "Not Them". TImes are tough, but how does scratching, clawing and in-fighting make anything better?

As much as I adore my work, I'm just about to chuck it all and go repair bassoons or tune pianos.

Jobs do not stress people out. People stress people out. Disc Jockey is by far one of the most stressful jobs.

A real estate agent's job not stressful!! I beg to differ. We are on call 24/7, have to take our phones everywhere we go including the bathroom. We never have a true vacation, we have to run out at a moment's notice, we have seller's constantly calling asking why their homes aren't selling, we meet buyers at homes that we may/may not know which can be very dangerous. We have deadlines, overhead, competition, unsteady pay, we are expected to be the repair person, the receptionist, the negotiator, etc....And my pay last year after expenses was less than if I had worked at McDonalds part time. Do I sound stressed?

@Susan - Doesn't sound like fun. Is the reward of a sale worth the headache?

Have just stumbled across this article and thought I would give my two pence worth! - computer repair technician is a pretty stressful job but I have to agree with Jason that it is the people we deal with that cause us stress rather than the computers themselves (well usually anyway!) :-)
